Why we do it: we want students engaged and actively learning in the lesson, not copying working out and taking notes. The tutor does the writing up. The student does the thinking, then reviews the notes later.

A few questions chosen for the student, on what was just taught. Short and daily beats long and weekly.
Spaced, not crammed
Coming back to an idea on several days moves it into long-term memory. That is the principle of spaced practice, and it is why the homework is small and daily.

Not the same questions a textbook gives everyone. The tutor picks the ones that match what this student needs to practise.
Checked next lesson
The next lesson starts with the homework. What was wrong tells the tutor what to teach next, so the plan is always based on evidence.
For parents
The notes let you see exactly what was covered without sitting in on the lesson, and the homework gives you something small and specific to ask about: "Did you do today's four questions?" is easier than "Have you done your maths?"
If something in the notes looks unfamiliar, that is normal. The point is that your child can explain it to you.
